Miles, who’d been acting on and off Broadway and on TV, got her start in audio by working with the American Foundation for the Blind, where she recorded fiction, nonfiction, and poetry-after getting rejected at first and tweaking her style to suit. She’s been the voice of such powerful pieces as Hidden Figures, the basis for the hit movie, and Roxanne Gay’s An Untamed State. A great adventure story with so much room for the next two books. The narrator! She bring such character to the whole of it, communicating all the emotion across so many characters. On the other hand, Jemisin goes where Butler didn’t/wouldn’t in terms of race and sexuality, which makes it a story for today’s conversations. This story lacks the depth of driving questions that Butler brings to her work and for that reason is a lighter read. Above all an homage to Octavia Butler, who writes science fiction better than anyone ever. In the tradition of science fiction with complex worlds to learn. In the tradition of revolutionary stories in which protagonists come into their power and insight slowly. Stories weave seamlessly shifting back and forth with perfect timing. Any woman over 40 especially will resonate with her attitude and strength. I especially appreciate the prickly strong protagonist, best complex female character I’ve come across. Oh, and by the way, my publisher is having a heck of a sale on the paperback version of Her Own Vietnam."Compelling story with vibrant characters and lots to learn about this world. Still love print books? So do I. Here’s a list of wonderful recommendations put together by independent booksellers across the country, called the Indies Next List. Unfortunately, this is a mystery, not a how-to for those of us in the nonprofit world. She has even narrated a book by Sheila Connolly with the intriguing title Fundraising the Dead. The novel focuses on Lilith, a young but “seasoned” woman (born into slavery on the plantation), and her mentor Homer, one of the older generation of enslaved people “from the Africa.” Both women have otherworldly powers and a heart for insurrection. The narrator – unidentified until the end of the book – tells the story in a Caribbean lilt that adds to the flavor and spookiness of the tale.

It’s about a handful of women who are enslaved on a sugar plantation in Jamaica in the early 1800s. This is one of those poetic, powerful novels that’s so good you grieve when it’s over. One of my favorites was The Book of Night Women, by Marlon James. Robin has narrated more than 200 audiobooks on alone. The best way to get to know her is to listen. She was a finalist in three other categories. I’m not the only one who appreciates her talent. Last night the Audie Awards were held – the Academy Awards of the audiobook world – and Robin won two Audies. I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and Robin Miles has long been my favorite narrator.
